Overview of the Brunello di Montalcino 2019 Vintage

The 2019 vintage in Montalcino is considered an excellent year for the production of Brunello di Montalcino. The year was characterized by a balanced growth of the grapes, resulting in wines of high quality and exceptional potential for aging.

Climatic Conditions

  • Winter:The winter of 2018-2019 was relatively cold with sufficient precipitation, which ensured a good replenishment of the water reserves in the soil. This was essential to provide the vines with sufficient moisture later in the season.
  • Spring:The spring was cool and rainy, which favoured a slow and even budding of the vines. The cooler conditions allowed for a slower ripening, which was a great advantage for the development of complex aromas in the grapes.
  • Summer:Summer started with moderate temperatures, followed by a short but intense heat wave in June. This heat was quickly followed by cooler nights and moderate temperatures, which allowed for a balanced ripening of the grapes. The vines benefited from the rainfall of previous seasons, which allowed them to avoid stress during the hottest periods.
  • Autumn:The harvest took place in ideal conditions, with cool nights and warm days, resulting in grapes with perfect ripeness and a good balance between acidity and sugar content.

Quality of the Grapes

The 2019 harvest produced grapes characterized by their concentration and aromatic richness. The tannins are firm but ripe, and the acidity is excellent, contributing to the freshness and aging potential of the wine. The wines of this vintage show great depth and complexity, with promising aromas of red fruits, spices, and subtle earthy notes.

Taste profile of the wines

  • Colour:Deep ruby red with a brilliant intensity.
  • Nose:Expressive aromas of cherries, plums, and ripe berries, supported by spicy nuances such as tobacco, leather, and licorice. With time, tertiary aromas often develop such as truffle and mushrooms.
  • Taste:Full and powerful on the palate, with an excellent balance between fruity sweetness and lively acidity. The tannins are present but well integrated, which makes for a smooth but structured finish. The wine has a long, persistent finish with a slightly mineral touch.

Aging potential

Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is considered a wine with great aging potential. Thanks to its structure and balance, these wines can easily age in the cellar for 15 to 25 years or more, developing and becoming more complex.
