96/100 points Brunello di Montalcino 2019 Renieri

Ruby red wine with granite glints. In the nose aromas of raspberry, leather, tobacco and smoke. In the mouth the wine is complex, elegant, intense red fruit, rounded tannins. In the long aftertaste the wine is wonderfully soft. This medium-bodied Brunello is made in a fairly accessible style that is also accessible at a young age.

The vineyards, totaling 24 ha, of Renieri are located in the southern part of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Of these, 6 ha are planted for the Brunello wines. They are located between Torrenieri and Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The soils are volcanic in origin and full of gravel, clay, limestone and minerals. The vineyards are located at an altitude of between 320 and 450 meters. The vineyards of Renieri are owned by the Bacci family, who also have wineries in the Chianti and the Etna volcano. The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes. The vineyards are planted with a planting density of 5,500 plants per ha. Through intensive manual pruning of the vineyard, the yield per plant is reduced to 1 kg of grapes. This greatly increases the intensity and complexity of the wine. The vineyard was planted at the beginning of 2000.

The grapes are harvested by hand in September, after careful selection. After picking, the grapes are gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in large steel vats for a period of around 30 days. The wine is further matured for the first 12 months in tonneaux and then for another 24 months in 30HL oak barrels. After this, the wine is bottled and remains in the bottle in the cellars of the estate for at least another 12 months for further refinement.

Wine Journalists' Rating

96/100 Points James Suckling

Cherry, berry, and cedar aromas with some rose stem follow through to a medium to full body with ripe fruit and creamy tannins that are impressive and structured, yet they are polished and long. Excellent depth. Give this three or four years to come around. Drink after 2025.
