Annual highly rated Brunello di Montalcino from San Filippo

The Brunello 2019 from San Filippo opens intensely and refined with aromas of ripe cherries, dried roses, violets and a subtle touch of liquorice. Behind this floral elegance comes a touch of tobacco, wet earth and balsamic that give the bouquet depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine presents itself powerful and harmonious, with velvety tannins and an impressive structure. Juicy notes of cherries and plums give way to spicy accents of pepper, leather and a hint of cedar. The freshness keeps the wine lively and the finish is long and layered.

The grapes come from the cru vineyards of San Filippo, located on the eastern slopes of Montalcino at an altitude of 250 to 300 meters. The location offers perfect exposure to the sun and sufficient ventilation. The soil consists mainly of galestro (schist rock), clay and limestone. This composition ensures excellent drainage and a mineral undertone in the wine. The oldest vines in this vineyard date from the late 1990s, with plantings between 1997 and 2004. The vines are now fully mature and give low yields of high quality.

The 2019 vintage is considered an excellent Brunello year. A fresh spring and warm summer without extreme heat were followed by a perfect late summer. The grapes reached optimum ripeness with a beautiful balance between sugar, acidity and phenolic ripeness. The harvest took place manually in the first two weeks of October, carefully staggered to select only perfectly ripe grapes. After picking, the grapes were gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasted for about 20 days, with regular remontages to extract color and flavor. The wine was aged for 24 to 28 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 12 months of refinement in bottle. This classic upbringing gives the wine its balance between power, finesse and ageing potential.

Wine Journalists' Rating

James Suckling 95/100 points

Really pretty fruit with pure berries and cherries with flowers. It's medium-bodied with medium round tannins and a juicy finish. Shows a citrusy undertone to the whole thing with fresh acidity that runs long. Give it two or three years to come together. Better after 2025.

Robert Paker 94/100 points

This wine is the equivalent of the village bottling from San Filippo. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Dei Comunali offers a 360-degree view onto Sangiovese with tangy forest fruit, star anise, white pepper and licorice. The oak aromas take on more prominence given this wine's baritone personality. It offers a solidly constructed finish with hints of roasted coconut or macadamia nut over a spicy mid-weight finish. It unfolds to nice balance.
