96/100 points Suckling Brunello Riserva from Capanna

Clear garnet red wine with intense aromas, dark red ripe fruit, plums, black cherries, in compote with blood orange citrus, tobacco, balsamic and oriental herbs. In the mouth the wine is full, warm, complex, delicious dark fruit, beautifully balanced with fresh acids. The finish is long, silky and a fine tannin structure.

The vineyards of Capanna are located just north of the town of Montalcino. In total the company has 23 ha of vineyards (Montesoli). The soil type is mainly clay with rock. The grapes of the Brunello Riserva come from the oldest and best part of the vineyards.

After the manual harvest of the grapes in late September, early October, they are carefully selected and then softly pressed. The spontaneous fermentation, with the natural yeasts from the vineyard, takes place in large steel vats, with the skins, for a period of 25 to 30 days. The further maturation of the wine takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels, from 10hl to 32 hl, for a period of 42 months. After this, the wine is bottled. In the bottle, it refines for at least 15 months in the cellars of the domain.

Brunello 2019 Capanna Riserva wine/food combination, delicious with meat dishes, steak, pork tenderloin and aged cheeses.

Wine Journalists' Rating

96/100 points James Suckling

A combination of blue fruit with dark currants as well as tile and aromatic herbs. Some dark cherries. The full-bodied palate has lots of succulent and ripe flavors with softness and juiciness too. It's opulent for the vintage but shows form and tension at the same time. Best in three or four years.

93/100 points Robert Parker

With medium-plus fruit weight, the Capanna 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva shows a flinty mineral signature that cedes to dried fruit and blackcurrant. This is a plush and rich Riserva that has the added force of 15% alcohol pushing over the palate from behind. There's a contrasting touch of the sweet and the sour on the silky finish.

97/100, Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com

Decidedly pronounced in its sensorial profile, it shows notes of black cherries, black plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, sage, bay leaves and catmint. Black tea leaves and white moss describe the secondary scene. Medium-full body, well-extracted, slightly stiff tannins and a solidly progressive finish. Wow, he's just asking for more time but he will kidnap us with his ways from 2029 onwards."
