The main characteristics of Barolo wines from Serralunga:

1.Powerful and Structured

  • Tannins: Barolos from Serralunga generally have a very firm tannic structure. This often makes them a bit more severe and robust in their youth, but it also gives them enormous aging potential.
  • Long Lifespan: The powerful tannins and good acidity allow these wines to age for decades. They develop more complex aromas and a softer texture with age.

2.Aromatic Profile

  • Deep Aromas: Serralunga Barolos are known for their deep and complex aromas. Typical scents include black cherry, plum, tar, tobacco, and leather. After aging, secondary aromas often emerge such as truffle, forest floor, and a hint of rose.
  • Minerality: Due to the chalky soils of Serralunga, these wines often develop a pronounced minerality, which contributes to their complexity and depth.

3.Terroir

  • Soil: The soil in Serralunga consists of compact, calcareous clay and sandstone, known as "Serravallian sandstone". This soil contributes to the power and minerality of the wines.
  • Climate: The climate is continental with warm summers and cold winters, which ensures a slow ripening of the grapes. This promotes the development of complex flavors and aromas.

4.Powerful, Full Flavor

  • Flavor profile: In the mouth these wines are full, powerful and intense. The firm tannins and high acidity provide a pronounced structure. These characteristics make the wines not only powerful, but also elegant and refined after a few years of maturation.

5.Maturation potential

  • Slow Ripening: Barolos from Serralunga are known for their ability to age slowly, often reaching their full potential after 10 to 20 years or more. During this time they evolve into wines of unparalleled complexity and refinement.
