Product information

Luigi Pira, a centuries-old winery from Serralunga, produces a wonderful classic Barolo

The Barolo Margheria has a garnet red color. In the nose the wine is intense and complex, with fruity, floral scents and nuances of leather and fresh hay. In the mouth the wine is rich, complex, elegant with fresh acidity. Velvety tannins in the long lasting aftertaste.

The grapes come from the Cru Margheria vineyard located in Serralunga. The vines were planted in 1959. The vineyard is 1.5 hectares in size. The soil type is limestone with clay. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 340 meters and has a southern exposure.

The grapes are picked by hand at the end of September, beginning of October, after careful selection. Fermentation takes place in large, temperature-controlled steel vats, for a period of 18 to 20 days. The wine matures for a period of 24 months in large oak barrels of 25 HL. After this, the wine is bottled and refines for at least 10 months in the cellars of the estate.

About Luigi Pira:
Founder, namesake and father Luigi Pira, who passed away in 2021, had been growing grapes in and around Serralunga for decades. These were sold to the large wineries in and around Alba. In the early nineties of the last century, his son Gianpaolo took over the helm and changed the strategy of the company. Quality became his spearhead. Since the nineties, they have been making classic and high-quality Barolos, with character, under their own label. Luigi Pira has a total of 13 hectares of vineyards in Serralunga.

Wine Journalists' Rating

95/100 James Suckling

Bright pale ruby with a garnet rim, this wine exhibits aromas of smashed violets, blood oranges, cinnamon and balsamic. The palate is soft and refined, full-bodied, with elegant tannins and lifted long acidity. Great tension. Drinkable now, but best from 2034.
