Castiglion del Bosco began a new chapter in 2003, when it was transformed by Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo to its current glory. Castiglion del Bosco has gained worldwide recognition for its excellent wines.

In 2022, Castiglion del Bosco will begin a new chapter in its history with the transfer to an international family office, which will ensure continuity and the development of the entire estate.

Castiglion del Bosco is located in the northwest of Montalcino, where the rocky, nutrient-poor soils are perfect for producing wines of excellent structure and complexity. The estate’s 2,000 hectares are largely occupied by dense forests of holm oak, oak and beech, alongside pastures, organic crops and 62 hectares of vineyards planted exclusively to Sangiovese. There are two completely separate growing areas, each different in appearance, soil and weather conditions: the 20-hectare Gauggiole vineyard, just below the borgo, and Capanna, with 42 hectares. Capanna is the estate’s vineyard, a single 42-hectare parcel that winds along the ridge like a vast, feeder-flowing river of green. It faces southwest, at an altitude that starts at 250 metres and reaches 460. The vineyard, registered exclusively for the production of Brunello, is divided into separate plots, starting from the top of the hill, called Campo del Drago, and extending to the foot of the slope.

The soils in the upper areas are characterised by an abundance of rocks, a compact, gravelly mass, explains winemaker Cecilia Leoneschi, which, combined with the scarce groundwater resources, forces the vine to push its roots deep into the ground. Here the rows are most exposed to the wind, which is the dominant feature of this vineyard, and most subject to large temperature variations between day and night. As one descends the slope, the character of the rock changes, with the central part being largely galestro, while rock-strewn clay slate predominates even further down. Dedication and passion produce unique wines in this unique part of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, which year after year receive the highest ratings from wine journalists.
