San Filippo - Brunello di Montalcino
🍇 San Filippo – Brunello di Montalcino
🏛️ History and Ownership
San Filippo was founded in 1972 and is located in the eastern part of Montalcino, Tuscany. In 2003 the estate was acquired by Roberto Giannelli, a former real estate agent from Florence. After the acquisition, Giannelli made significant investments in both the vineyards and the winery, which led to a remarkable improvement in the quality of the wine.
📍 Location and Vineyards
The estate covers approximately 22 hectares, of which 11 hectares are planted with Sangiovese Grosso grapes. The vineyards are divided into four plots: Le Lucére, La Storta, Le Raffiche and La Smarrita. These plots are located at an altitude of 300 to 400 metres above sea level and have a mainly north-eastern to northern exposure. The soils consist of clay, limestone and marl of Eocene origin.
🍷 Wine Style and Production
San Filippo produces approximately 50,000 bottles of wine annually, including:
-
Brunello di Montalcino : A classic expression of Sangiovese Grosso, with a production of approximately 10,000 bottles per year.
-
Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére : A single-vineyard wine from the Le Lucére parcel, with a production of approximately 18,000 bottles per year
-
Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére Riserva : Only produced in exceptional years, with a limited edition of approximately 3,000 bottles.
-
Rosso di Montalcino "Lo Scorno" : A younger, fruitier wine with a production of about 20,000 bottles per year.
The wines are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in both large oak barrels and barriques. The focus is on preserving the freshness and terroir character of the grapes.
San Filippo has received international recognition for the quality of its wines. The Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére 2015 was awarded a 97-point rating by Wine Spectator and was included in their Top 100 Wines of 2020. The wines are praised for their balance, complexity and ability to age well.
🏡 Visit and Tourism
San Filippo also offers accommodation on the estate through the San Filippo Wine Resort. Guests can stay in a restored farmhouse from 1672, enjoy wine tastings and explore the beautiful surroundings of the Val d'Orcia.
