Product information

Fantastic Barolo from Castiglione Falletto from top producer Vietti

Ruby red wine with garnet glints. On the nose lush scents of plum, red cherry and ripe black cherry, blackberry, black cherry, rose petals and tobacco. On the palate the wine is classic, rich and powerful, with hints of alpine herbs and a leather finish. The tannins are nicely integrated.

The Barolo 'Castiglione' is a classic Barolo. The grapes come from small but very important vineyards spread over the different municipalities of the Barolo area, with vines that are between 10 and 45 years old. The soil is calcareous-clay. The average density per hectare is around 4,500 plants.

The grapes are harvested manually in September/October. After this, the grapes are gently pressed and the fermentation with the skins takes place in steel vats, at a controlled temperature, for a period of 3 to 4 weeks. The must is regularly pumped around during this period. The malolactic fermentation takes place in wooden barrels. The wine matures partly in large oak barrels and partly in barriques for a period of 30 months. After this, the wine is bottled. In the bottle, the wine refines for at least 10 months in the cellars of the domain.

Wine/food suggestion for Barolo Castiglione: Stew, game, red meat and cheese.

About Vietti:
At the end of the 19th century, about 150 years ago, Carlo Vietti started his own winery in Castiglione Falletto, in the same place where the company is still located today. In 2016, the company was bought by the Krause family. In addition to taking over the company, they decided to invest even more in the company by purchasing new vineyards. In 2023, Carlo Vietti will leave the company. It is important to know that the Krause family still adheres to the fundamental values that have brought the Vietti family this far.

Wine Journalists' Rating

95/100 points Robert Parker

This is the most accessible Barolo from Vietti and the wine that casts the biggest net in terms of fruit sourcing from across many MGA sites. The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is a layered and generous wine that reflects the main takeaways offered by this very successful vintage. In fact, because this wine is not from a single site, it speaks more to the quality of the vintage than it does to any one specific vineyard. The Castiglione reveals generous richness and concentrated cherry fruit with dark saturation and good structure that comes from the thicker skins developed on Nebbiolo grapes this year. It concludes with a salty mineral note that adds focus and elegance.

94/100 points James Suckling

Extremely perfumed with hibiscus, flowers and watermelon with some fresh cherries. Medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Very solid. Made from about 20 different vineyards. Needs time to soften. Vegan. Drink after 2027.
