Product information

97/100 points Brunello from one of the best vineyards in Montalcino, from the five-star vintage 2019

The Brunello di Montalcino Valdicava 2019 is characterized by a rich and complex scent. Aromas of ripe cherries, blackcurrants and plums are complemented by hints of violets, cedar and tobacco. Subtle notes of vanilla, leather and spices give the wine extra depth.

In the mouth this Brunello gives a perfect balance between power and elegance. The taste is full and structured, with ripe red fruits such as cherries and berries, followed by nuances of chocolate, espresso and spices. The tannins are firm but refined, and the finish is long and persistent with a hint of liquorice.

The Valdicava vineyards are located on soils composed mainly of galestro (clay-shale soil) and limestone. This composition provides excellent drainage and contributes to the mineral freshness and complex structure of the wine.

The Valdicava vineyard is located in the north of Montalcino, at an altitude of 300 to 400 meters above sea level. This higher terroir provides cooler nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and maintain their aromatic complexity.

The vineyards were originally planted in the 1960s and 1970s. Over the years, older vines have been replaced by young vines, but always retaining the authentic Sangiovese Grosso variety.

The year 2019 is considered an excellent vintage in Montalcino. The growing season saw a mild winter and a cool, wet spring, followed by a warm and sunny summer with cool nights. These weather conditions allowed for an optimal ripening of the grapes, with a perfect balance between sugar, acidity and tannins.

The grapes were picked by hand in the second half of September, when they had reached their ideal ripeness. Due to the careful selection during the harvest, only the best grapes are considered for this prestigious Brunello.

After harvest, the grapes are carefully destemmed and pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This phase lasts for about 20 days, with regular immersion of the skins to extract maximum colour, flavour and tannins.

The wine matures for at least two years in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by further maturation in the bottle. This traditional method gives the wine its complex aromas and refined structure.

The Brunello di Montalcino Valdicava 2019 is an ideal companion for rich meat dishes such as leg of lamb, beef stew and game dishes. This wine also goes well with mature cheeses, such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. Serve the wine at a temperature of 16-18°C for the best taste experience.

Wine Journalists' Rating

97/100 Points James Suckling

Aromatic with black cherries, oranges and cedar. Very perfumed. Medium to full body. Firm tannins. The wood is showing a bit now but will come through nicely. This is a structured and toned red. Give this three or four years more in bottle. Try after 2026.
