Sordo Giovanni Barolo Perno DOCG 2021 – powerful Cru Barolo from Monforte d’Alba
Barolo Perno 2021 – power and finesse from Monforte d’Alba
The Barolo DOCG Perno 2021 from Giovanni Sordois an impressive cru-Barolo from Monforte d’Alba, a municipality known for Barolo with great structure, depth, and aging potential. Perno, however, adds something special: in addition to power, this vineyard has a remarkably aromatic character.
The Sordo Perno 2021combines dark and red cherries, violets, and dried flowers with herbs, licorice, earth, and mineral notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with fresh acidity and firm yet ripe Nebbiolo tannins. The finish is long, dry, and complex.
Moreover, 2021 is one of the best recent Barolo vintages. The combination of a great vintage, Perno's unique terroir, and Sordo's traditional vinification makes this a Barolo for both serious enthusiasts and collectors.
A classic Barolo with the power of Monforte, yet with surprising perfume, finesse, and elegance.
Giovanni Sordo – traditional Barolo focused on the vineyard
The family business Giovanni Sordo is located in Castiglione Falletto and has been making wine for over a century. Over the years, the family has built up an exceptional collection of vineyards in various municipalities of the Barolo DOCG.
Sordo is among the producers who bottle a large number of individual Barolo MGAs. This makes it particularly interesting to taste the different Sordo Barolos side by side: the vinification is largely similar, while the character of the wines clearly changes due to the soil, altitude, and orientation of the vineyard. Sordo adheres to long traditional macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels.
Within this series, Perno is one of the most distinctive Barolos from Monforte d’Alba.
Perno – a special Barolo Cru in Monforte d’Alba
Perno is an official MGA – Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva – of Barolo within the municipality of Monforte d’Alba.
The hamlet of Perno is located in the northeastern part of Monforte, between Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba. Historically, this area is considered one of Monforte's better sites for Nebbiolo.
This is interesting because geographically, Perno is close to a number of famous Barolo terroirs. On the other side of the hills are vineyards of Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba.
Monforte is generally known for Barolos with:
structure – power – tannins – minerality – longevity.
But Perno also has a remarkably aromatic character. It is precisely the combination of deep, dark flavors and perfumed Nebbiolo that makes this cru particularly attractive. Sordo's American importer even explicitly describes Perno as a Monforte terroir where, in addition to power, the aromas are particularly striking.
Giovanni Sordo's Perno vineyard
According to available information, Sordo owns approximately 7 hectares within Perno, making it an important parcel within the family's vineyard holdings.

When were the vines planted?
The vines were planted in the late 1990s.
The unique soil of Perno
The soil is one of the main reasons why Perno can produce such a recognizable Barolo.
Sordo describes the topsoil as tuffaceous with layers of red earth, which is relatively difficult to cultivate.
The subsoil largely consists of:
- stone
- weathered rock
- sandy components
- clayey components
These materials have been firmly bound together over centuries. Geologically, according to Sordo, the underlying formations belong to the Langhian of the Miocene.
This is important for the style of the wine.
The rather hard, stony subsoil forces the roots to search deep for water and nutrients. In combination with clay, sand, and marl-like components, a terroir is created that can give Nebbiolo both structure and minerality.
In Perno, this often results in a Barolo with relatively dark aromas, powerful tannins, and great length.
Vintage 2021 – a great Barolo year
The 2021 vintage is now considered one of the best recent vintages for Barolo.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls 2021 a superb vintage, characterized by good color, expressive aromas, beautiful fruit, and ripe, refined tannins. In later tastings, Vinous confirmed that 2021 was not only high-quality but also exceptionally consistent.
The growing season was relatively warm and dry and faced local challenges, including spring frost. However, conditions leading up to the harvest were particularly favorable.
Nebbiolo was able to ripen slowly while retaining its natural acidity.
The harvest for some producers began in the last days of September, but for most of Barolo, the main period was in the first two weeks of October 2021. According to data collected from nearly 200 wineries, the average start date was around October 7th.
When was the Sordo Perno 2021 harvested?
For Barolo 2021, the Nebbiolo harvest generally ran from late September to about mid-October, with several high-quality parcels even being picked later.
The result was small, well-ripened grapes with a beautiful combination of sugar, acidity, and phenolic ripeness – ideal starting points for structured Barolo with a long future.
How is Sordo Barolo Perno made?
Giovanni Sordo also clearly opts for a traditional Barolo vinificationfor Perno.
After manual harvesting, the grapes are:
destemmed and crushed.
Alcoholic fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
This is followed by one of the most important parts of Sordo's working method: a particularly long maceration.
Cappello sommerso – long traditional skin maceration
The Perno undergoes a skin maceration of approximately:
4 to 7 weeks.
Sordo uses the traditional method of cappello sommerso, or submerged cap. This ensures that the solid components of the grapes remain in prolonged contact with the young wine.
This is important for Nebbiolo.
During this long maceration, aromas, color, and especially tannins are slowly extracted from the grape skins. Instead of producing a wine that should be soft and accessible as quickly as possible, Sordo consciously builds structure and longevity.
Then, malolactic conversion occurs naturally around 20°C.
The wine then remains in stainless steel for approximately 2 to 4 monthsbefore moving to large wooden barrels.
24 months aging in large Slavonian oak
The Perno then ages for:
24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels.
After that, the wine returns to
stainless steel for approximately 4 to 6 months
.
Finally, there is:
a minimum of 6 months of bottle aging before the wine is released.
This is classic traditional Barolo.
Sordo does not use wood to dominate the taste of the wine. Large Slavonian botti impart far less pronounced wood aromas than small new barriques.
So, no abundance of vanilla or toasted new oak.The goal is rather to allow Nebbiolo to develop slowly, while preserving as much as possible the character of Perno itself
.
How does Sordo Barolo Perno 2021 taste?
The Perno is among the darker and more powerful Barolos in Sordo's range.
Aromas
- In the young wine, we find aromas of:
- dark cherries
- red cherries
- violets
- dried flowers
- ripe red and dark fruit
- dried herbs
- licorice
- earthy notes
- tobacco
- spices
light truffle notes
Sordo himself describes the Perno as intense and long-scented, with ripe fruit, woody aromas, spices, and licorice.
The taste
On the palate, the Perno 2021 is clearly full-bodied and powerful.
This is not a light or immediately soft Nebbiolo. The wine has broad shoulders, great structure, and a firm core of fruit.
In contrast, the fresh acidity provides tension.
The tannins are clearly present – as they should be in young Barolo from Monforte – but they are ripe and of good quality.Huon Hooke gave this wine 97 points
and described it as full, generous, and powerfully structured, with a particularly long and firm finish.
Wine Decoded describes the 2021 as a classic Sordo Perno with dark, rich fruit, a still very closed youthful structure, and nascent notes indicating truffle and further secondary development. The wine received 94 points there.Wine Enthusiast gave 92 points
and particularly emphasized red fruit, sweet spices, and the excellently dosed tannin structure.
The Perno Barolo is an excellent choice for someone who enjoys a powerful Barolo but does not want to compromise on elegance and aromas.
Drink now or age?
The Sordo Perno 2021 can be opened now but is clearly at the beginning of its development.
Our indication would therefore be:2026–2028:very young; decant for at least 2 to 3 hours2029–2034:fruit, tannins, and aromas begin to integrate more beautifully2035–2042:probably a particularly interesting phase with more tertiary complexity2042+:
well-stored bottles are expected to develop further
This is deliberately an indication and not a hard expiration date. The great 2021 vintage, the tannin structure of Perno, and Sordo's traditional vinification all point to a wine that can develop over a long period.
With bottle aging, the primary aromas of cherries and violets will increasingly give way to:
dried roses, truffle, tobacco, leather, forest floor, tea, spices, and licorice.
Decanting and serving temperatureFor those drinking the Perno 2021 now, we advise decanting it for at least two hours before drinking
.
For such a young Barolo, three hours of aeration certainly won't hurt.
Do not serve the wine too warm.
Sordo officially advises:
16–18°C.
We find this an excellent temperature for this wine. The fruit remains fresh, the alcohol recedes, and the finesse of Nebbiolo remains more visible.
Preferably use a generous Burgundy or Barolo glass.
