Sordo Giovanni Barolo Rocche di Castiglione DOCG 2021 – a great Cru Barolo from Castiglione Falletto

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2021 – power, finesse, and an exceptional terroir

The Barolo DOCG Rocche di Castiglione 2021 from Giovanni Sordocomes from one of the most esteemed vineyards in Castiglione Falletto. Here, Nebbiolo grapes grow on a steep, south-east facing slope at an altitude of 320 to 350 meters, underlain by compact calcareous marl layers. The vines are on average approximately 50 years old.

The great vintage 2021gives this cru everything one can expect from a classic top-Barolo: ripe red cherries and berries, dried roses, licorice, mint, and herbs, combined with mineral notes, fresh acidity, and powerful yet refined tannins.

Rocche di Castiglione is not a soft Barolo built solely on fruit. This is a serious, layered, and long-lived Nebbiolo, which already shows its class but is primarily made to develop further for many years.

A wonderful choice for the enthusiast seeking a classic Barolo where power and elegance converge.

Giovanni Sordo – traditional Barolo from the heart of Castiglione Falletto

Giovanni Sordo belongs to the historic family producers of Barolo. The history of the winery dates back to 1912. Today, the family owns about 53 hectares of vineyards spread across various municipalities in the Langhe.

Particularly noteworthy is the large number of individual Barolo crus that Sordo owns. The winery produces Barolo from Rocche di Castiglione, Monprivato, Villero, Parussi, Gabutti, Perno, Monvigliero, and Ravera, among others.

Four of these are located in Castiglione Falletto: Rocche di Castiglione, Monprivato, Villero, and Parussi.

Sordo consciously opts for a traditional style. No prominent new oak, but long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. This ensures that the focus is not on the wood, but rather on the distinction between the individual vineyards.

Rocche di Castiglione – a special Barolo Cru

Rocche di Castiglioneis an official MGA – Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva – within the municipality of Castiglione Falletto.

It is one of Barolo's historic vineyard names, and Sordo himself describes Rocche di Castiglione as being located in one of the most suitable viticultural areas of the municipality.

Castiglione Falletto lies, as it were, between the more powerful terroirs of Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba on one side, and the often more perfumed style of La Morra and Barolo on the other.

This is reflected in the best wines from Rocche di Castiglione.

They can combine the structure, minerality, and lengthof the eastern Barolo zone with aromatic finesse and elegance.

It is precisely this contrast that makes Rocche di Castiglione so interesting.

Sordo's vineyard in Rocche di Castiglione

For this Barolo, Giovanni Sordo exclusively uses Nebbiolo from his plot within Rocche di Castiglione.

Municipality:Castiglione Falletto
Cru / MGA:Rocche di Castiglione
Grape:100% Nebbiolo
Altitude:approx. 320–350 meters
Exposure:south-east
Age of vines:approx. 50 years
Planting density:approx. 4,000 vines per hectare
Pruning method:traditional Guyot
Yield:approx. 68–72 quintals of grapes per hectare, roughly 6,800–7,200 kg

Sordo mentions an age of approximately 50 years for this vineyard, but does not publish a reliable exact planting year. Therefore, we prefer to state the official age of the vines rather than an unconfirmed planting year.

The age of the vines is important. Older Nebbiolo vines typically produce fewer grapes, while their roots can penetrate deep into the subsoil. This helps in achieving concentration and complexity, and also makes the vines less dependent on superficial soil moisture.

The soil of Rocche di Castiglione

The soil is one of the main reasons for the unique character of this cru.

Sordo describes the topsoil as medium-heavy and relatively loose, with a clear calcareous component.

At a depth of slightly more than a meter, there are hard, very compact layers of white-grey and bluish marl. In Sordo's technical documentation, these geological layers are still referred to as belonging to the so-called Helvetian.

For Nebbiolo, such a calcareous and marl-rich soil is particularly interesting.

The wine not only gains structure but also the recognizable mineral tension that can be so appealing in Rocche di Castiglione.

The result is not a heavy or heavily concentrated wine. The best Rocche combine:

power – freshness – minerality – fine aromas – long tannins.

Vintage 2021 – a great year for Barolo

2021 is one of the strongest recent vintages in Barolo.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls 2021 a superb vintage, characterized by good color, expressive aromas, beautiful fruit, and ripe, refined tannins.

The growing season did have its challenges. After winter, there was frost in April, while the summer was warm and relatively dry. However, conditions in September and October were very favorable for Nebbiolo.

Especially the difference between warm days and cooler nights helped in the slow development of aromas, while the grapes were able to retain their acidity.

The Nebbiolo harvest began in many parts of Barolo at the beginning of October 2021and continued for several producers until mid-month.

The final result of 2021, however, is particularly convincing: Barolos with both concentration and energy, combining ripe fruit with fresh acidity and very good tannin ripeness.

How is Sordo Rocche di Castiglione made?

Giovanni Sordo opts for a distinctly traditional way of making Barolo.

After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and crushed.

Alcoholic fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

This is followed by a particularly long skin maceration using the traditional method of cappello sommerso, or submerged cap.

At Sordo, this maceration for Rocche di Castiglione lasts approximately:

4 to 6 weeks, depending on the character of the vintage.

This is considerably longer than for many modern red wines.

During this long period, aromas, color, and especially tannins are slowly extracted from the skins. This is a crucial part of the traditional Barolo style, especially for Nebbiolo.

Aging in large Slavonian oak

After vinification, the wine first undergoes:

6 months of aging in stainless steel tanks.

This is followed by:

24 months of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels of 10 hectoliters.

This is important for the wine's style.

With large used botti, the contact between wine and wood is relatively small. Therefore, you won't distinctly taste vanilla, toast, or new oak as with wines aged in small new barriques.

The purpose of the long wood aging is primarily a controlled, slow development of the Nebbiolo.

The vineyard should speak, not the wood.

This fits perfectly with Rocche di Castiglione, where minerality, tannin structure, and the character of the soil are central.

How does Sordo Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2021 taste?

The Rocche di Castiglione 2021is a distinctly more powerful and serious Barolo than some of Sordo's more immediately accessible crus.

Aroma

On the nose, you can expect aromas of:

  • red cherries
  • strawberries and small red berries
  • dried roses and flowers
  • licorice
  • mint and dried herbs
  • anise
  • warm spices
  • tar
  • stone and minerality
  • subtle earthy notes

Sordo himself mentions licorice, mint, and ripe fruit, with notes of resin and sweet spices possibly developing with further bottle aging.

Taste

On the palate, the 2021 clearly has structure.

The red fruit is framed by vibrant acidity and firm but very fine tannins. Mineral and slightly savory notes also emerge.

Mike Bennie of The Wine Front tasted red cherry and strawberry fruit, iron-like minerality, anise, herbs, and wet stone, among other things. He rated the wine with 95 pointsand emphasized the serious, powerful character of the wine.

Falstaff was also particularly positive, giving the Rocche di Castiglione 2021 94 points. The tasters found a layered bouquet with berries, cherries, and fine spices, followed by rich fruit, tightly woven tannins, and great length.

The finish is long and dry, with red fruit, licorice, herbs, and minerality slowly giving way to the characteristic tannins of young Barolo.

International ratings

The quality of the 2021 is also confirmed by several international tasters.

Gardini – 96 points
Mike Bennie / The Wine Front – 95 points
Falstaff – 94 points

This perhaps says even more than just a number: within a range of eight different cru Barolos, Rocche di Castiglione 2021 clearly belongs to the most serious wines.

Drink now or age?

Anyone opening this wine now will find a young and powerful Barolo.

The quality is already there, but the different components – fruit, acidity, and tannins – still need to integrate further.

For drinking at a young age, we therefore recommend:

decant for at least 2 hours.

Preferably use a large Barolo or Burgundy glass and give the wine sufficient time to open up.

Those who are patient will likely be rewarded.

The combination of the excellent 2021 vintage, the approximately 50-year-old vines, fresh acidity, and firm tannins gives this wine excellent aging potential.

Our indicative estimate:

2026–2029:young, powerful, and very tannic – decant generously
2030–2035:more harmony, fruit and tannins beautifully integrate
2035–2045:classic ripe Barolo with increasing tertiary aromas
2045+:good bottles can likely develop further with perfect storage

With further bottle aging, the primary red fruit will slowly give way to notes of:

dried roses, tobacco, leather, forest floor, truffle, tea, tar, and spices.

Sordo himself explicitly describes Rocche di Castiglione as a wine with great longevity.

Serving temperature

Sordo officially recommends a serving temperature of 18–20°C.

We prefer to serve young Barolo ourselves slightly cooler, around 16–18°C.

Especially with a young, tannic Barolo like this, the red fruit, freshness, and floral aromas remain more balanced. The wine will naturally warm up slowly in the glass.

Food pairings with Rocche di Castiglione 2021

This is a Barolo that demands dishes with sufficient flavor and structure.

Excellent combinations include:

  • brasato al Barolo
  • slow-cooked beef
  • entrecôte or ribeye
  • ossobuco
  • lamb
  • deer and roe deer
  • wild boar
  • duck breast
  • risotto with porcini
  • tajarin with truffle
  • ravioli with meat
  • dishes with mushrooms
  • Parmigiano Reggiano
  • Castelmagno
  • other long-aged hard cheeses

Sordo himself primarily recommends Rocche di Castiglione with roasted meats and game.

However, one of our favorite combinations remains a classic Piedmontese dish with porcini or truffle. The earthy notes of the dish beautifully complement the development of Nebbiolo.
