Now "ready to drink" beautiful 95/100 points Parker from Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cru Fossati

The nose of this beautiful Cru Barolo is intense and complex with aromas of ripe cherries, dried rose petals, liquorice, truffle and fine tobacco. Subtle notes of mint, wet earth and tar give extra depth. In the mouth this Barolo is powerful yet elegant, with a firm structure and silky tannins. Flavours of dark fruit, balsamic, leather and spices combine with a striking freshness and a long, mineral finish.

The Fossati vineyard is located just east of the village of Barolo, in an amphitheatre-like slope with perfect exposure to sunlight. The vineyard is located at an altitude of around 350 metres and is known for its balance between power and finesse. The soil in Cru Fossati consists mainly of calcareous marl (Marne di Sant'Agata) with layers of sand and clay, which ensures excellent drainage and a deep minerality in the wine. The vines in Voerzio's Fossati vineyard were planted between 1990 and 1995. The high planting density per hectare and the rigorous yield limitation ensure concentrated grapes of top quality.

The 2015 vintage was an excellent vintage in the Barolo zone. A warm, sunny summer and a perfectly timed harvest produced wines with ripe tannins, aromatic complexity and long ageing potential.

The grapes for this wine were harvested manually in the first half of October 2015, at the ideal ripening time. Only the best bunches were selected. After the harvest, a slow fermentation follows in stainless steel with a skin maceration of 20 to 30 days. Only natural yeasts are used. Roberto Voerzio is known for his meticulous vinification with great attention to detail. The wine matures for about 24 months in large French oak barrels (Grosso Botti), followed by 8 months in stainless steel and at least 12 months in bottle. Little new wood is deliberately used to let the terroir speak.

The Fossati 2015 is now beautifully "drinkable". But you don't have to rush to enjoy this beautiful Cru Barolo. You certainly have until 2040.

Wine and food pairing
Excellent with refined dishes such as truffle risotto, ossobuco, wild boar ragù or slow-cooked veal cheek. Also wonderful with a board of matured cheeses or seasonal mushrooms.

Wine Journalists' Rating

95/100 points Robert Parker

The 2015 Barolo Fossati is slightly more accessible (by the smallest of margins) with well-defined fruit notes of wild berry and redcurrant, followed by rose hip, spice and dusty mineral or crushed slate. This wine is enormously focused and sharp, right down to its deep inner core, with elegant padding and layering at the back. It shows volume and length. The textural fiber of this wine is slightly more relaxed. This is an elegantly constructed and conceived expression of Nebbiolo from one of La Morra's most gifted artisans.

94/100 points James Suckling

A dense and fruity red with plums, dark berries, chocolate and hazelnuts throughout. Full body, creamy textured tannins and a chewy yet polished finish. Needs two or three years to come together.
