Barolo from Serralunga – power, structure, and length

2022 Vintage – an extreme year that yielded surprisingly good Barolo
2022 was one of the driest and warmest growing seasons in Barolo's recent history. The drought began in winter and persisted for almost the entire growing season.
As a result, the Nebbiolo harvest took place much earlier than usual. In various parts of Barolo, harvesting was 10 to 20 days earlier than average.
Initially, there was fear that the wines would be heavy, alcoholic, or tannic.
In practice, with the best producers, often the opposite happened.
The grapes remained small and concentrated, but producers had by then gained much experience with warm years and adjusted their vineyard work accordingly. Less defoliation, sun protection, and careful extraction in the cellar proved essential.
Serralunga was among the winners of 2022

According to Decanter, Serralunga d'Alba, along with Castiglione Falletto, was among Barolo's best-performing communes in 2022. The wines surprisingly combined good ripe fruit with freshness and structure.

The natural power of the terroir gives the wine sufficient backbone, while the warm year has made the often austere Serralunga tannins somewhat more accessible.
Vinification and aging
After harvesting, the Nebbiolo ferments in vertical stainless steel tanks.
The wine remains in contact with the skins for approximately 20 to 30 days. This is significantly shorter than some of Germano's individual Cru-Barolos, where maceration can last much longer.
After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to various oak barrels of differing sizes and ages.
There, the Barolo ages for approximately 18 to 24 months.
Subsequently, after bottling, approximately six months of bottle agingfollows before the wine is released.
This approach aligns well with the goal of this wine: the structure and depth of Serralunga, but without making the wine so austere that it only becomes interesting after many years.
Scent and taste
The Barolo has a deep, clear garnet red color.
On the nose, we find ripe red fruit, complemented by sweet spices, forest floor, and refined balsamic notes. The oak aging also brings a subtle hint of vanilla, without the wood dominating the Nebbiolo.
On the palate, Serralunga's character becomes clearer.
The wine has a firm structure and clearly present tannins, but these are refined and well-integrated. Fresh acidity provides tension and keeps the ripe fruit lively.
The finish is long, with red fruit, spices, and the savory, earthy notes characteristic of Nebbiolo from Serralunga again present.

When to drink?
This is a Barolo that is interesting relatively young.
The warm character of 2022 has made the wine rounder and more accessible than you sometimes expect from Serralunga.
Our preference:
2026–2029:for those who enjoy young fruit, freshness, spices, and firm Nebbiolo tannins.
2030–2036:probably the best period, when fruit, tannin, and development merge better.
2036 and beyond:further development towards dried flowers, tobacco, leather, truffle, and earthy notes.
For young drinking, we recommend decanting for about one to two hours.
Serve around 17°C.
Wine and food pairings
The power and fresh acidity of this Serralunga-Barolo make it an excellent match for rich dishes.

You get Nebbiolo from some of Serralunga's best-known terroirs, made by a producer who literally has his roots in this municipality.
At the same time, the character of 2022 makes it more accessible than many classic Serralunga-Barolos.
