Beloved Barolo from Cogno from Novello from the 2020 vintage

Coming from the newest vineyards. Created to satisfy the curiosity of consumers who want to understand Barolo more directly. The wine is bright garnet red in color with orange hues. Pleasant and direct, it offers scents of flowers and light, delicate herbs. In the mouth the wine is round, elegant, well-balanced, juicy, lively with fresh acidity. The finish is long, harmonious with mineral notes and rounded tannins.

The grapes come from the newest vineyard of Elvio Cogno. The Barolo Cascina Nuova proves that even the youngest vineyards can produce an excellent Barolo, easily accessible, more direct and with a broad appeal. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 380 meters near the town of Novello. The vineyard is 3 hectares in size and planted with 4,000 vines per hectare.

The grapes are picked by hand in late September, early October and carefully selected for quality. After picking, the grapes are gently pressed and undergo fermentation in large steel vats, in which the must is regularly pumped around. The wine matures for a period of 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. After this, the wine is bottled. The wine refines in the bottle for at least 6 months before it is marketed.

About Elvio Cogno:
Following in the footsteps of founder Elvio Cogno, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore today lead the winery with four generations of winemakers and viticulturists, dedicated to making from the unique terroir excellent wines, renowned all over the world for their elegance, texture and balance. Their winemaking methods include long, spontaneous fermentation, slow and never excessive extraction, a judicious use of immersion of the must, large barrels and the silence - mysterious and expectant - of ageing.

Wine Journalists' Rating

94/100 Robert Parker

This wine sources its fruit from across three hectares on clay limestone soils. The Elvio Cogno 2021 Barolo Cascina Nuova is the most accessible wine in the family's portfolio, and indeed, the intensity threshold is a little lower in this case (especially compared to the Ravera), although you do get plenty of delicate Nebbiolo nuances. The bouquet offers dark fruit, blue flower and spice. This wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 24 months, so the primary fruit remains front and center. I suggest another year of bottle age to give the wine time to find better focus.

96/100 points James Suckling

This Barolo shows lavender, dried cranberries, licorice and a touch of tile on the nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and balanced, with lovely, succulent fruit complemented by incisive acidity. The tannins are fine grained yet chewy, but they gradually resolve toward the bright finish. Better from 2026.
