Product information

95+/100 Cru Ravera, coming from the highest Novello vines from the five-star 2019 harvest year

Ruby red wine with garnet reflections. In the nose ripe red fruit with subtle spiciness. In the mouth the wine is harmonious, well structured, powerful, complex, beautifully balanced with an extremely long finish accompanied by velvety tannins. The wine is elegant and tempting even when young, but its silky softness and especially its complexity ensure that it can mature as only great wines can.

Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice, named after a small hill on which partridges build their nests. It is the latest wine from Elvio Cogno. The result of years and years of hard work, a wine from a beautiful vineyard in Novello, in the most historic part of the Ravera cru, where the exceptional microclimate produces beautiful Barolo. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 320 meters near the town of Novello. The vineyard is 1 hectare in size and planted with 5,000 vines per hectare.

The grapes are picked by hand in late September, early October and carefully selected for quality. After picking, the grapes are gently pressed and undergo fermentation in large steel vats, in which the must is regularly pumped around. The wine matures for a period of 30 months in large Slovenian oak barrels of 25-30 HL. The wine is then bottled. In the bottle, the wine refines for at least 18 months in the cellars of the estate.

About Elvio Cogno:
Following in the footsteps of founder Elvio Cogno, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore today lead the winery with four generations of winemakers and viticulturists, dedicated to making from the unique terroir excellent wines, renowned all over the world for their elegance, texture and balance. Their winemaking methods include long, spontaneous fermentation, slow and never excessive extraction, a judicious use of immersion of the must, large barrels and the silence - mysterious and expectant - of ageing.

Wine Journalists' Rating

95+/100 points Robert Parker

The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice starts off with earthy notes, with the fruity ones pouring in a little later. You get potting soil, bow resin, a hint of petroleum, blue bells and mountain flowers. Fruit-wise, there is plenty of plum and blackcurrant. There is an almost green tone of rhubarb or cruciferous vegetable. The Bricco Pernice cleans up in the mouth, with super grippy tannins that need more bottle age. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

94/100 points James Suckling

A profusion of floral, mineral and bitter-herb aromas precede taut red cherry and pomegranate flavors in this tightly wound, nervous and assertive wine. Tight around the edges now, it has the complexity and depth to improve from 2028 and beyond.
