Product information

95+/100 Cru Ravera, from the highest Novello vines from the five-star 2019 vintage

Ruby red wine with garnet reflections. The nose reveals ripe red fruit with subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is harmonious, well-structured, powerful, complex, and beautifully balanced, with an exceptionally long finish accompanied by velvety tannins. Even when young, the wine is elegant and appealing, but its silky smoothness and, above all, its complexity allow it to age as only great wines can.

Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice, named after a small hill where partridges build their nests, is Elvio Cogno's latest wine. The result of years of hard work, this wine comes from a beautiful vineyard in Novello, in the most historic part of the Ravera cru, where the exceptional microclimate produces exquisite Barolo. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 320 meters near the town of Novello. The vineyard covers one hectare and is planted with 5,000 vines per hectare.

The grapes are hand-harvested in late September and early October and carefully selected for quality. After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in large steel vats, where the must is regularly circulated. The wine is aged for 36 months in large 25-30 hectoliter Slovenian oak barrels. The wine is then bottled. After bottling, the wine refines for at least another 18 months in the estate's cellars.

About Elvio Cogno:
Following in the footsteps of founder Elvio Cogno, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore now lead the winery with four generations of winemakers and viticulturists, dedicated to crafting exquisite wines from the unique terroir, renowned worldwide for their elegance, texture, and balance. Their winemaking methods include long, spontaneous fermentation, slow, never excessive extraction, judicious use of must immersion, large barrels, and the silence—mysterious and expectant—of aging.

Wine Journalists' Rating

95+/100 points Robert Parker

The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice starts off with earthy notes, with the fruity ones pouring in a little later. You get potting soil, bow resin, a hint of petroleum, blue bells and mountain flowers. Fruit-wise, there is plenty of plum and blackcurrant. There is an almost green tone of rhubarb or cruciferous vegetable. The Bricco Pernice cleans up in the mouth, with super grippy tannins that need more bottle age. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

94/100 points James Suckling

A profusion of floral, mineral and bitter-herb aromas precede taut red cherry and pomegranate flavors in this tightly wound, nervous and assertive wine. Tight around the edges now, it has the complexity and depth to improve from 2028 and beyond.
