Product information

Barolo DOCG 1961 - From vineyards planted in 1961.

A light ruby-red wine with garnet glints. The nose is noble and open, with intense aromas of rose, ripe red fruit, light balsamic notes, soft spices, and a hint of minerality. On the palate, the wine is juicy yet classically dry, with ripe yet distinct tannins. The wine has a wonderfully long finish with some spice and red fruit (cherry, strawberry), and the finesse typical of La Morra Barolo.

The wine is a blend of three historic parcels in La Morra – Roggeri, Bricco San Biagio, and Rive – situated at an altitude of between 250 and 300 meters, with a south-east/south-west exposure. The soil is predominantly sandy-limestone-clay, from the Tortonian Marne, which contributes to the elegant style of Barolo. The vineyards were planted in 1961 at a density of approximately 3,800 vines/ha. The yield is around 45 hl/ha. The grapes come from the oldest vines, planted in 1961 – the cuvée name "1961" refers to this.

The Nebbiolo grape is late-ripening and is usually harvested in La Morra in mid-October (second/third week), often in multiple harvests for optimal ripeness. Ciabot Berton harvests the grapes by hand, simultaneously carefully selecting for quality and ripeness. After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation takes place traditionally with the skins for 16 to 20 days, partly in glass-lined concrete vats and partly in steel vats, all at controlled temperatures, with a long maceration before traditional extraction. The wine is further aged in Slavonian botti of approximately 25 hectoliters for approximately 18 months. This is followed by further refinement in steel or concrete vats, followed by a final six months in bottle in the estate's cellars.
