Cantina Brezza's Barolo Sarmassa 2021 is a cru for enthusiasts who seek not only elegance but also extra depth, spice, and tension in Barolo. This wine comes from a plot of just 1 hectare in the municipality of Barolo, at an altitude of 300 meters with a west to southwest exposure. The relatively clay and silt-rich soil gives the wine structure, suppleness, and impressive length, while the strong 2021 vintage ensures freshness and precision.
Sarmassa 2021 immediately shows why this cru is so beloved. In the glass, you'll taste and smell a classic, layered Barolo with notes of dark spices, wild berries, cherries, blood orange, licorice, and balsamic herbs. Beneath these are floral and more ethereal nuances that give the wine refinement, while the finish remains tight and long thanks to the fresh acidity and finely integrated tannins.
Sarmassa vineyard is located in the municipality of Barolo and comprises approximately 1 hectare at Brezza. The vines are situated at an altitude of 300 meters, with a west to southwest aspect. The planting density is 3,700 vines per hectare, the pruning system is traditional Guyot, and the rootstocks are K5BB and 420A. Brezza's Sarmassa vineyard was acquired in 1941, with partial replanting in 2000. It consists of Nebbiolo with the Lampia and Michet sub-varieties.
Here, the soil clearly defines the style. The Sarmassa vineyard soil consists of 26.3% sand, 43.2% silt, and 30.5% clay. Geologically, the terrain largely belongs to the Marne di Sant’Agata Fossili. Wines from this plot perform exceptionally well in dry years because the higher proportion of clay and silt ensures greater water retention, meaning the vines experience less stress. This often makes Sarmassa compact, balanced, and particularly interesting in vintages with little rainfall.
2021 was a strong vintage in Barolo. The season began with a mild winter, but with sufficient rain and snow to replenish water reserves. This was followed by a relatively dry growing cycle with little rain, healthy grapes, and ultimately a harvest that was about 10% smaller in quantity than in 2020. For Nebbiolo, picking began at the end of September and peaked in the second week of October. The grapes were healthy, smaller than in 2020, and rich in polyphenols, typically yielding wines with structure, balance, and aging potential. Especially on a plot like Sarmassa, which Brezza says handles drier conditions well, this sounds particularly promising.
For this wine, one can therefore speak of a classic and favorable Barolo year where ripeness and freshness converged. The grapes were hand-picked in the first half of October after careful selection.
In terms of vinification, Brezza remains true to a distinctly classic style. The estate works with natural yeasts and traditionally ages the wines in large, untoasted Slavonian oak botti. The maceration of the Sarmassa grapes is typically longer because the grapes here naturally have softer tannins. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by extended skin contact with regular pump-overs, malolactic fermentation, and then about two years of aging in large Slavonian botti, followed by approximately one year of bottle aging.
In taste, this translates to a Barolo that is powerful but not heavy. The tannins are clearly present but refined, and the acidity keeps the wine lively and precise. As a result, the wine is already impressive to taste now, but it also has everything it needs to develop further in the coming years.
Food pairing
This cru Barolo is perfect especially with game and red meat, but its elegance makes it excellent to serve throughout an entire meal. Practically, think of venison, roe deer, osso buco, slow-cooked beef cheek, mushrooms with truffles, or a fine piece of sirloin. This Sarmassa also comes into its own excellently with aged hard cheeses.
