Cantina Brezza's Barolo 2021 is one of those wines that immediately shows why traditional Barolo is so beloved. This is not a flashy, powerful style, but a refined, classic Barolo with fragrant notes of roses, red fruit, spices, and a beautiful tension on the palate. For generations, Brezza has worked from the village of Barolo, cultivating organically and allowing Nebbiolo to express itself fully, without the mask of new wood. The result in 2021 is a particularly elegant, pure, and promising Barolo.
In the glass, this Barolo displays a classic and inviting profile. Expect aromas of red berries, cherries, and strawberry, complemented by floral notes of blue flowers or rose, plus nuances of spices, star anise, eucalyptus, and black tea. On the palate, it is crisp, refined, and energetic, with fresh acidity and fine, polished tannins that give the wine length and seriousness. It is a Barolo that already has charm, but is clearly also built for further development in the bottle.
This Barolo is not a single vineyard, but a classic Brezza blend from vineyards in the municipalities of Barolo, Monforte d’Alba, and Novello, thus from the southwestern part of the Barolo zone. It is precisely this combination of different plots and microclimates that gives the wine its balance between aroma, structure, and elegance. The soil type in the vineyards consists of clay, sand, and silt, located at an altitude of approximately 300 meters, with east and west exposures, traditional Guyot training, a planting distance of 1 x 2.7 meters, and a density of approximately 3,700 vines per hectare. The vines were planted around the early nineties of the last century.
Barolo 2021 is widely considered a very strong vintage. After a winter that replenished soil water reserves, a predominantly warm and dry growing season followed without extreme heat, with cool nights towards the harvest. This ensured good aromatic freshness and ripe tannins. Brezza's harvest took place from late September to mid-October. This aligns well with the character of 2021: structured, classic, yet remarkably balanced.
Brezza works in a distinctly traditional manner. The family harvests by hand and vinifies with a light, restrained touch in the cellar. For this Barolo, the producer speaks of a vinification similar to that of the crus, but with a slightly shorter maceration, approximately 30 days of skin contact, and fermentation in stainless steel. This is followed by a classic two-year aging in large Slavonian oak barrels, without new wood, plus approximately one year of bottle aging. It is precisely this approach that preserves the character of Nebbiolo and the terroir beautifully: no sweet woody notes in the foreground, but finesse, tension, and depth.
Food pairing
This Barolo calls for dishes with depth, but does not necessarily have to be overly heavy. Think roasted or grilled red meat, braised beef, game dishes, and aged cheeses. Thanks to its fresh acidity and refined tannins, it also works very well at the table, where structure, juiciness, and richness come together.
