Azelia's Langhe Nebbiolo 2022 is a pure, fruit-driven Nebbiolo from chalky slopes in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga. Young vines (approximately 20 years old), grapes hand-harvested in late September 2022, a short maceration, and aging in stainless steel vats produce a wine with violet, cherry, and raspberry notes, lively acidity, and silky tannins—precisely the elegant "entry" to Barolo you expect from Azelia.

Product information

A bright ruby-red wine with aromas that leap from the nose: violets and other floral notes, followed by crisp red fruit: cherry, strawberry, currant, and raspberry. A hint of forest floor/wild fruit adds depth. On the palate, the wine is juicy and clean with lively acidity; red fruit, cherry, and raspberry, with light, silky tannins and a slightly mineral finish.

The grapes come from Azelia's youngest Nebbiolo vines in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba (Langhe). The vineyards are situated on southwestern and southeastern slopes at an altitude of 235–340 meters. The soil consists primarily of white calcareous soils, which give the wine its freshness and contribute to its refined tannic structure. The vines are pruned according to the Guyot system. The vines were planted at the beginning of this century, with an average density of 4,500 vines per hectare.

The 2022 vintage in Piedmont was warm and dry, with early ripening. Rainfall in August/September preserved freshness; yields were lower than average. The vintage yields a style of ripe red fruit, energetic acidity, and polished tannins. The 2022 harvest began early; in the Langhe/Barolo region, the Nebbiolo grapes were largely harvested by late September and finished before early October. Azelia harvests by hand during this period to preserve the aromas and freshness. After harvest, the grapes were softly pressed with a short maceration and indigenous fermentation of approximately 7–10 days to preserve the fruit and finesse. Fermentation takes place entirely in stainless steel vats. Further aging of the wine takes place exclusively in large stainless steel vats to ensure a pure, clear Nebbiolo expression can be bottled.
