San Polino - Brunello di Montalcino
San Polino is a historic winery in Montalcino that applies biodynamic principles to produce elegant and expressive Brunello wines. With a strong focus on sustainability and terroir, the winery offers high-quality wines that are appreciated by critics and wine lovers alike.
🏰 History and Ownership
The origins of San Polino date back to the 10th century. In 1581 the estate was mentioned as a property of the hospital Santa Maria della Croce in Montalcino. In the 18th century it came into the hands of the noble Piccolomini family from Siena. In 1990 the estate was bought by Luigi Fabbro and his English wife Katia Nussbaum, who completely restored it and planted their first vineyards in 1994. They obtained organic certification that same year, making them among the pioneers of organic viticulture in Montalcino .
🌱 Vineyards and Biodynamic Philosophy
San Polino owns about 10 hectares of vineyards, divided into three plots at altitudes between 350 and 450 meters. The soils vary from calcareous loam to volcanic rock, which contributes to the complexity of the wines . The winery is completely biodynamic and does not use synthetic pesticides or sulfur. They produce their own compost and promote biodiversity by planting grasses and beans between the vines.
🍷 Wine Style and Quality
San Polino produces exclusively wines made from 100% Sangiovese, including:
- Brunello di Montalcino DOCG : From northern slopes with loamy soils; full and structured.
-
Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum DOCG : Made from grapes from the highest vineyards; elegant and powerful.
-
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG : Only produced in exceptional years; deep and complex. San Polino Montalcino
-
Rosso di Montalcino DOC : A younger, fruity expression of Sangiovese.
The wines are spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large Slavonian oak barrels. Critics praise the wines for their purity and balance; the 2010 Brunello, for example, was awarded 99 points by James Suckling.
🌿 Sustainability and Innovation
San Polino is a pioneer in sustainable viticulture. They use microbiological sprays made from forest compost to promote a healthy microbiome in the vineyard. The winery works with scientists in geology, botany and entomology to continually improve their practices.
