Fuligni - Brunello di Montalcino
The Fuligni winery was founded in 1923 by Giovanni Maria Fuligni, a descendant of a Venetian noble family that settled in Montalcino at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1971, the estate has been managed by his daughter, Maria Flora Fuligni, who works with her nephew, Professor Roberto Guerrini Fuligni. The family has restored the historic 16th-century Medici palace, which now serves as a residence and cellar.
Vineyards and Terroir
Fuligni owns about 100 hectares of land on the eastern slopes of Montalcino, of which 14 hectares are planted with vines. The main vineyards are located in Cottimelli, at altitudes ranging from 380 to 450 meters above sea level. The soils consist of Eocene Santa Fiora marl with a predominantly rocky structure. Other vineyards, such as San Giovanni, Il Piano, Ginestreto and La Bandita, are located on south-eastern slopes with tuff and clay soils.
The vines have an average age of 15 to 35 years, with some mother vines over 40 years old. Planting density varies between 3,333 and 5,600 vines per hectare, and yields are deliberately kept low to maximise quality.
Winemaking and Quality
Fuligni is known for its uncompromising quality standards. If a vintage does not meet their high standards, no Brunello is produced. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in a combination of Slavonian oak barrels and French tonneaux. Brunello di Montalcino is aged for a minimum of four years, including two to three years in wood, while Riserva is aged for five years, with at least three and a half years in wood.
The wines are characterized by elegance, freshness and a harmonious balance between fruit and spices. They combine traditional and modern styles and are often praised for their longevity and complexity.
