Biondi-Santi stands out not only for its historical role in Brunello di Montalcino wine, but also for the unique location of its vineyards and the traditional production methods that the winery has maintained for generations.
Biondi-Santi Vineyards
The heart of Biondi-Santi is located on the historicTenuta Greppo, an estate of about 47 hectares on the hills southeast of Montalcino. The vineyards are located at an altitude between300 and 500 meters above sea level, which ensures cool nights and slow ripening of the grapes. This contributes to the freshness, elegance and longevity of the wines.
The soil consists mainly ofgalestro, a chalky, stony clay soil that is ideal for the Sangiovese Grosso grape (the specific clone that Biondi-Santi has developed over the centuries). This soil contributes to the mineral and refined structure of the wine.
Traditional Production Methods
Biondi-Santi is known for hisclassic and pure style of Brunello, where innovation never comes at the expense of tradition. Some characteristics of their approach:
- Manual harvest:The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected to retain only the best quality.
- Slow fermentation:Fermentation takes place in cement or stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts, which contributes to a slow and controlled development of aromas.
- Maturation in large oak barrels:Unlike many modern Brunello producers who use French barriques, Biondi-Santi ages its wines inlarge Slavonian oak barrels(botti). This ensures a slow evolution and preserves the pure fruit expression and lively acidity of the wine.
- Exceptional storage potential:Biondi-Santi's Brunellos are known for their incredible aging capacity. Some bottles from the early 20th century are still perfectly drinkable, which emphasizes the timeless character of this wine.
With this traditional approach, Biondi-Santi remains true to its heritage, while the wines show exceptional balance, finesse and depth every year. It is a winery that combines respect for the past with an uncompromising focus on quality.
