A light ruby-red wine with garnet glints. On the nose, it reveals beautiful, classic Barolo aromas of roses, dried flowers, and licorice, with notes of truffle, herbs, and a hint of tar. Elegant and persistent, typical of Oddero. On the palate, the wine is dry and precise, with ripe yet firm tannins. Juicy red berries and cherries, spiciness, and a mineral, slightly salty note on the finish. The 2021 is particularly refined and inviting (crushed flowers, red/blue fruit, fine spices).
The grapes for this classic Barolo come from the various vineyards owned by Oddero, La Morra (frazione Santa Maria) from the Bricco Chiesa and Capalot plots, plus the Bricco Fiasco vineyard located in Castiglione Falletto.
The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 200–250 meters, with a predominantly southeasterly exposure in La Morra and southwesterly in Castiglione Falletto. The vineyards are planted at a density of 4,000 vines/ha. The vines are pruned according to the Guyot system. The vineyards in La Morra cover approximately 2.7 hectares, and in Castiglione, 2.5 hectares. The vines are planted in sections, the oldest of which date back to around 1960. The soil consists of a mixture of fine clay, sand, and limestone. It is precisely this terroir's blend that gives the wine its tension and aromatic intensity.
The 2021 vintage is considered a very fine, territorial Barolo vintage with a long, balanced ripening period. Oddero hand-harvested the grapes, carefully selected in mid-October.
Selected and harvested bunches were fermented separately, plot by plot, in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasted approximately 20 days at 28–29°C, followed by malolactic fermentation. Further aging then took place, plot by plot (each plot separately), in large Slavonian and Austrian casks of 40–75 hectoliters for 30 months. The wines from the various plots were blended in the spring, with bottling in late summer and aging in the bottle for six months before release. The wine is further refined in the Podere Oddero cellars until it is sold.
Wine and food pairing for the Barolo Classico
A classic pairing with Piedmontese meat dishes (brasato al Barolo, ossobuco), aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, aged Castelmagno), mushrooms & truffle, game (hare stew), and mushroom risotto. The 2021 combines elegance with structure, making it an excellent pairing with rack of lamb, pappardelle with ragù, and creamy polenta with mushrooms.
