The Poggio di Sotto Estate and Vineyards were founded in 1989 and have since built an impeccable reputation.
The vineyards are located on the eastern slopes of Montalcino, in the area of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, at an altitude of between 200 and 450 metres. This position is ideal for the Sangiovese Grosso grape, which benefits from excellent sun exposure and the cool breeze from nearby Monte Amiata, ensuring slow and even ripening.
The soils are mainly a rich mix of galestro, clay and sandstone, which contributes to the minerality and finesse of the wines. Poggio di Sotto works with old vines, some of which are over 50 years old, resulting in low yields but exceptional concentration and complexity in the wines.
Traditional Vinification and Maturation
Poggio di Sotto is known for its traditional and patient approach to winemaking. All grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected so that only the best bunches are used. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in large open wooden vats, allowing the wine to retain its pure expression.
As for maturation, Poggio di Sotto follows the classic Brunello tradition: Brunello di Montalcino is aged for at least 42 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. After barrel maturation, the wines are aged in the bottle for at least 6 to 12 months before being released onto the market.
This slow maturation allows Poggio di Sotto wines to develop their characteristic complexity, silky tannins and lively freshness, allowing them to age and refine for decades.
The Style of Poggio di Sotto
Poggio di Sotto wines are often described as the most Burgundian of Brunello, thanks to their refined aromas, high acidity and deep minerality. They combine intense fruit notes of cherries and plums with subtle hints of roses, herbs, tobacco and truffle, resulting in a layered and harmonious wine experience.
The Brunello di Montalcino from Poggio di Sotto is elegant, yet structured and powerful, with a stunningly long finish.
Conclusion
Poggio di Sotto is a name synonymous with excellence within Brunello di Montalcino. Thanks to their unique terroir, meticulous attention to detail and respect for tradition, they produce some of the region’s most coveted and long-lived wines. For lovers of refined, terroir-driven Sangiovese, Poggio di Sotto is an absolute must.
